Blackrock Hospice
Blackrock Hospice, which is under the management of Our Ladys Hospice Ltd., was officially opened on the 22nd June 2003 by President Mary McAleese. It is a specialist palliative care centre which provides in-patient care, day hospice care and home care.
The Hospice is situated in the heart of Blackrock, Co. Dublin on the site of a former Carmelite Convent and was built by the Louis and Zelie Martin Foundation. The purpose built Hospice was constructed around the original House and Chapel of the Carmelites and is named The Venerable Louis & Zelie Martin Hospice after the parents of St. Therese of Lisieux.
Blackrock Hospice continues in the tradition of Our Ladys Hospice, Harolds Cross and follows the ethos and values of the Religious Sisters of Charity. The aim of the Hospice is to provide specialist palliative care to patients and their families through a team approach using evidence based grounded care and research. We strive to provide a top quality health service promoting wholeness of body, mind and spirit in an atmosphere of loving care.
The Hospice is staffed by a dedicated team including Consultants in Palliative Medicine, Nurses, Care Assistants, Social Workers, a Physiotherapist, Hydrotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Psychologist, Catering Staff, Household Staff, Porter, Complementary Therapists, Chaplain, Risk Officer, Registrars and Administrative Staff. Volunteers also contribute significantly to our work in Blackrock Hospice.

Our Home Care Service transferred from Harolds Cross in July 2003. The in-patient unit opened in December 2003 initially with 3 beds. In October 2005 we opened the remaining beds and we now have a total of 12 beds in the in-patient unit. Our Day Hospice opened in November 2005 on a three-day week basis and cares for up to 12 patients each day.
Blackrock Hospice is funded by the Health Service Executive with very significant financial support from fundraising, donations and bequests.
