Occupational Therapy

There are 15 Occupational Therapists and one assistant providing service in the three Units in the Hospice, where they treat over 1,400 patients per year.

The objective of the O.T. service is to maximise the 'fit' between what an individual wants and needs to be able to do and their abilities to achieve this.

This involves empowering people to improve or maintain their independence and satisfaction with life in the areas of self-care, work and leisure.

Occupational Therapy Manager, Deirdre Rowe, says that therapy varies according to a person's individual priorities, medical condition and stage in life.

The whole focus of the Occupational Therapy Department is on maximising choice and independence, enhancing well-being and quality of life. Patient education is an integral part of the service.

Each unit has its own O.T. Department with bright and modern facilities and a full range of up-to-date therapeutic equipment. This includes Activities of Daily Living (ADL) assessment and treatment areas, individual and group therapy rooms for interventions such as specialised seating, splinting and therapeutic activity.

Occupational Therapists are members of the multi-disciplinary teams based in each unit.
