Volunteers

Welcome to the Volunteer Department of Our Lady’s Hospice Ltd. People volunteer for many reasons such as to help others, give something back, make new friends and feel their contribution makes a difference, no matter how small. Below are listed the activities volunteers are involved in. Fundraising Volunteers are needed from time to time, however, there is a waiting list for people who wish to become Patient Care Volunteers. Enquiries are always welcome.

Patient Care Volunteers

They work in Extended Care, Community Reablement, Palliative Care, Rheumatology/Rehabilitation Units and Blackrock Hospice and contribute greatly to the smooth running of the Hospices, under the direction of Volunteer Co-Ordinators, Carolyn Roe and Walter Walsh.

Areas in which they help include:

Helping patients with drinks & meals Eucharistic Ministry & altar preparation
Working in coffee shop Handcare for patients
Driving for Dayhospice, home visits, outings and external medical appointments Helping with fundraising events i.e. Light up a Life, Coffee day, Sunflowers etc.

Computers for residents Administrative support

Volunteers are all ages and transition year students from a number of local schools come to the Hospice for their community service.

Volunteers receive a mandatory training programme covering two full Saturdays, plus ongoing training when necessary.

Those who are thinking of becoming Patient Care Volunteers should have a caring attitude to the needs of others, be reliable, punctual, and flexible, have plenty of good old fashioned common sense and a sense of humour also helps!

The time to which they are prepared to commit is not as important as the fact that they are prepared to sustain whatever commitment they make.

There is also a social side to Patient Care Volunteering, an annual outing and Christmas party.
