Community Reablement
The Community Reablement Unit (CRU) is an innovative facility for older persons, which is based in Our Lady’s Hospice, Harold’s Cross, Dublin 6W. The 24-bed unit was opened in 2003 as a partnership between St. James’s Hospital, Our Lady’s Hospice and the H.S.E.
CRU is an in-patient rehabilitation unit for the over 65-year-old population living at home in Dublin Central, Dublin South Central and Dublin West. The focus of the unit is to maximise patients’ safety, functional independence and mobility to enable continued community living.
The CRU service would be of benefit to people who may be struggling at home with mobility difficulties, joint problems, recurrent falls or a recent functional decline in daily activities. The average length of stay is 2-3 weeks with home leave at weekends.
Follow up care after discharge from CRU is via G.P. and local health centres.
High motivation and an ability to participate along with a strong desire to continue living at home are essential to gain maximum benefit from the CRU programme.
